Starting a Biostimulator Now? Your Skin Will Thank You by the Holidays

Glow Medical Group · Delaware, OH ·

Biostimulators like Sculptra and Radiesse rebuild your own collagen over weeks — which is exactly why October is the ideal time to start before the holidays.

If you’ve ever wished your skin looked a little firmer, a little more “awake” in holiday photos, here’s something worth knowing: the treatments that do that best don’t work overnight. They work slowly — and that’s exactly why October is the perfect month to start.

Biostimulators — including Sculptra and Radiesse — are injectable treatments that go beyond what wrinkle relaxer and traditional filler do on their own. They wake up your own skin’s collagen production, so the result keeps building over the following weeks and months, looking like you, just refreshed. (Radiesse also gives you immediate volume from its filler component — more on that below.)

What a Biostimulator Actually Does

As we age, we lose about 1% of our collagen per year starting in our late twenties. That’s what causes the gradual thinning, the hollows in the cheeks, the softening of the jawline, and the fine crepey texture that makeup can’t quite fix.

A biostimulator is injected into the areas where collagen has been lost — but the two work a little differently. Sculptra is pure collagen stimulation: the product itself isn’t the main event, it’s the signal that tells your skin to start rebuilding its own collagen in that area. Radiesse, on the other hand, is a combination of a filler and a biostimulator — you get immediate volume from the filler component, and then your own collagen builds around it over the following weeks and months. Either way, the long-term improvement looks natural because it is natural: it’s your own collagen doing the work.

How They Differ From Filler and Wrinkle Relaxer

These treatments complement each other, but they solve different problems:

  • Wrinkle relaxer softens expression lines (forehead, crow’s feet, frown lines) by relaxing the muscles that create them. Results appear within days and last a few months.
  • Traditional filler adds immediate volume and structure — think lips, cheeks, or under-eyes. You see it the same day.
  • Biostimulators rebuild the foundation underneath. Sculptra works purely over time — right after treatment, what you see is mostly swelling, which settles over a few days. Radiesse gives you immediate volume from its filler component (unless it’s hyper-diluted), and then keeps improving as your collagen builds. Either way, a few months later your skin is firmer and more resilient in a way filler alone can’t achieve.

Many of my patients do a combination: a biostimulator series for the foundation, plus filler or wrinkle relaxer for targeted refinement. During your consultation, I’ll map out what makes sense for your face, your timeline, and your budget.

Why the Timing Matters

Because biostimulators build gradually, they reward planning. A typical treatment plan involves a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart, with the full result developing over about three months.

Do the math: starting in October means your collagen is actively building through November, and your results are at their best right when the holiday photos, parties, and family gatherings arrive. Starting in December, on the other hand, means you’d be mid-series while everyone else is taking pictures.

This is one of the few aesthetic treatments where “later” is genuinely the wrong answer. If you’ve been curious about it, now is the time.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your first visit is a consultation where we talk through your goals and I assess your skin — the quality, the areas of volume loss, and whether a biostimulator, filler, or a combination is the right approach. There’s no pressure and no obligation; I’ll tell you honestly what I think will (and won’t) help.

If we move forward, the treatment itself is straightforward. We use numbing to keep you comfortable, the injections take about 30 minutes, and most people return to normal activities the same day. You may have some mild swelling or tenderness for a few days, which is your body’s normal response as it starts the collagen-building process.

At Glow, Sculptra and Radiesse are $800 per syringe, and I’ll always tell you up front how many syringes your plan is likely to need so there are no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do biostimulator results last?

Typically up to two years or more, which is considerably longer than traditional filler. Since the result is your own collagen, it fades gradually rather than disappearing all at once. Most patients come in for a maintenance treatment once a year or so to keep things topped up.

Will I look different right after treatment?

It depends on which one you get. With Radiesse, yes — you’ll leave with visible volume from the filler component, plus some swelling that settles over the next few days. With Sculptra, what you see right after is swelling from the injections themselves, which goes down over several days; the real improvement unfolds quietly over the following weeks. Either way, friends tend to say you look rested, not “done.”

Is this better than filler?

It’s not better or worse — it’s different. Filler is ideal when you need precise, immediate structure or volume in a specific area. Biostimulators are ideal when the overall quality and firmness of the skin needs support. Often the best outcome comes from using them together, and I’ll walk you through both options honestly.

Does it hurt?

We numb the area first, and most patients describe the treatment as very tolerable — a little pressure, mild stinging. It’s quick, and you’ll be back to your day right after.

If you’ve been thinking about doing something for your skin before the holidays, this is your sign. The collagen you build in October is the glow you wear in December.
